1950s Juliet Cap with Netting

Students will work from a purchased buckram base and construct a simple, 1950s, "Juliet"-style hat. Techniques will include: wiring, applying bias tape to the edge, forming the hat, and sewing fabric. Students will also add hat netting, decorations, and a lining.

Students will provide their own hat-making materials and should have on hand the following items:
- Buckram base (available at Amazon for ~$15 https://a.co/d/gbUAF7E)
- Styrofoam head form or canvas wig/hat block (https://a.co/d/5Lh2g1l)
- 1 yard millinery wire (covered in thread) or craft wire (covered in paper)
- 1 yard 1/2" wide double-fold bias tape
- 1/4 yard fashion fabric for cover
- 1/4 yard of satin for lining
- scrap of muslin for creating pattern
- flowers, bows, etc, for decoration
- hat veil or netting (available on Etsy or Amazon)

Meet the Instructor
Stacia Smith-Alexander is the costume shop supervisor and principal lecturer with the University of New Mexico’s Department of Theatre & Dance. She teaches technical costume and design courses and is an avid artist with diverse interests and skills, including costume design for dance, millinery, and CLO 3-D pattern making. Recently, Stacia designed flamenco costumes for choreographers Mercedes Ruíz (2020), Lidón Patiño-Berja (2022), and Marco Flores (2023), featured in the UNM Faculty Dance concert "Las Horas Contadas," by Marco Flores. She is a proud member of IATSE Local 480, working as a technician, patternmaker, and stitcher. Her latest passion projects involve studying millinery history and techniques with Laura Del Villaggio of Millistar in 2023.
